How To Hit The Driver Further And Shoot Lower Golf Scores
The driver is probably the most difficult club in the bag to master but it can also be the most fun to hit if you can learn to hit it well. The length of the driver being the longest club and the fact that it is very easy to put the wrong kind of spin on the ball is what makes this club a challenge to master for golfers of all levels. The key to hitting the driver well is a combination of good swing mechanics and club head speed.
Pick the right driver for your swing type:
If you have a powerful swing that generates a lot of club head speed that is over 120 mph then you will want a driver that has around 9.5 degrees of loft or lower and a stiff shaft. If your club head speed is lower than that then go for something with more loft that is over 10 degrees and a regular or senior flex shaft. You must first develop strong and accurate swing mechanics before you start trying to add more power. You should use in most cases a medium strength grip pressure to prevent the club head from twisting too much so do not grip the club too lightly. However at the same time do not choke the club too much either as this can increase tension and lead to bad swings.
Leverage is a key factor in hitting the ball far and is generated using a lot of different approaches. Think of the club as a whip and feel yourself whipping the club through the impact zone as this is a good way to increase leverage. Also on the downswing feel your left shoulder thrusting up toward the sky as this is a good tip to help increase power in the swing. Maintain solid balance on every swing, if you find yourself not keeping good balance on a regular basis then it probably means you are trying to swing too hard so back off a little until you are consistently able to keep good balance.
Tee height can also affect ball striking, for the driver you want half of the ball to be above the top of the club head. This will promote an upwards strike that will give you the best ball flight. You have probably heard that you need to keep your head down and this is indeed true so keep your eyes focused on the back of the ball and swing through and let your right shoulder bring your head up with the momentum of the follow through.
