Golf Mental Game Tips

The mental game of golf can really help you to become a better a player and shoot lower scores. Developing an effective pre shot routine is a key part of the mental game of golf and so is learning how to manage the course properly. Here are a few mental game tips to help you shoot better scores more quickly:

Tip 1: Play within yourself

Many golfers try to do too much on the course and end up losing unnecessary strokes in the process. It is important to learn to only hit shots on the course you are confident you can execute well and have pulled off before with a high percentage during practice rounds. Just because your favorite golfing pro on tv hit the same shot from a similar situation does not mean you have to go for the same risky shot. The pros on tv have spent countless hours developing their game and can pull off those shots with regularity however this does not apply to most amateurs.

Tip 2: Have a conservative course management strategy

It is important to know what your strengths and weaknesses are during every round you play. However in most cases it is better to be conservative on a golf course than overly aggressive. Just because you are being conservative does not mean you are not trying to shoot a low round or make a lot of birdies. On a short par 4 for instance you do not necessarily have to pull out a driver to make a birdie but could instead opt for a 3 wood or even a long iron off the tee and rely on a 9 iron or even 8 iron approach into the hole to stick it close and make the putt for birdie.

This is especially critical if using driver brings all kinds of trouble like water and out of bounds into play. A lot of short par 4’s are designed to tempt you to use the driver but you need to be careful sometimes and just stick with a shorter club off the tee and keep the ball in the fairway.

Tip 3: Learn to forget your mistakes

Too many golfers remind themselves too much of the bad shots they hit both on the course and even when they are off the course they focus too much on the poor shots. This does not help to build confidence and having a lot of confidence is important to being a more consistent player. It is fine to be irritated by bad shots and use that irritation to improve your swing however do not dwell on the poor shots. You are much better off dwelling on all the great shots you have hit, if you have played golf for any amount of time then you undoubtedly have hit plenty of very good shots too so choose to focus on that instead.
