Golf Putting
Putting is one of the most important aspects of golf and can really make a big difference in helping to lower your handicap faster than anything else. Putting is primarily a mental challenge so learning the right attitude and mindset is critical for long term putting success. However practicing properly and working on mechanics is still very important and should not be ignored. Here are a few tips on how to improve your putting so you can play better golf faster:
Tip 1: Practice short putts often
Most of your putting practice time should be focused on short putts inside 10 feet. These putts are the foundation to great putting and if you can be confident at these short putts then you will be also more confident with the longer putts and consequently be a better putter overall. Putt from all sides of the hole inside ten feet. Since you will make the vast majority of these putts it is a great way to build confidence which is critical to great putting.
Tip 2: Stop jumping from one method to the next
It is important to realize that many mechanical approaches can and have worked well for many people. Pick a fundamental putting technique you like and then only make minor adjustments in order to fine tune and improve it. No putting technique is perfect and you will never make every putt you look at and also you need to accept that every now and then you will 3 putt. Even the best putters in the world 3 putt on occasion the difference is that they recover quickly and one putt a lot too in order to make up for the poor putting performances.
Tip 3: Learn to look and react
Most putters that struggle tend to think too much on the putting green. Too much thinking especially when you are about to strike the putt interferes with your natural ability to judge distance and direction and will usually result in less than optimal performance. It is fine to take your time reading the greens and taking practice strokes however once you have done that then simply setup, take a last look at the target and let the putt go only with the thought of the target in your mind and not how you missed the last putt or questioning the break of the current putt.
